Medical & Surgical
Adana Veterinary Clinic provides lifetime care for your pet. We focus on preventive care and owner education right from puppy/kitten hood. We perform complete examinations on healthy as well as sick pets and thanks to our in house laboratory, X-ray and level of experience we can often get you the answer you need within a day. We are very gentle and take our time with the animals, doing our very best to make them feel comfortable with us.
A wide range of soft-tissue surgeries are offered at Adana: Routine spay/neuter, C-sections, various abdominal procedures, wound-repair and tumor (mass) removal. Orthopedic procedures include repair for torn cruciate ligaments, patella luxation repair, fracture-repair, and more. All of our surgical patients receive pain medication before their surgery as well as after surgery and for home care if needed. Please be advised that for ethical reasons we do not perform declawing of cats, but we are happy to help discuss alternative methods for unwanted/destructive scratching in your home.
Anesthesia is very safe for your pet at Adana due to our experience, our high tech anesthesia delivery system and state of the art monitoring.
When pets are to be anesthetized they are first given an injection of “pre-medication” drugs. This may include a tranquilizer, pain medication and drugs to control salivation and heart rate under anesthesia. The tranquilizer ensures a smooth induction into the anesthesia plane as well as a smooth recovery. Once sedate an injectable anesthetic is given into the bloodstream; the pet becomes unconscious and an endotracheal tube is inserted into the trachea. The endotracheal tube is hooked up to our anesthesia unit. Our anesthesia unit, ADS 1000 is a high tech computerized anesthesia delivery system. Most veterinary facilities use a regular unit that relies on the pet to breathe by itself under anesthesia. Not getting enough oxygen under anesthesia is one of the highest risk factors for complications.
At Adana the ADS 1000 assures extremely safe anesthesia: The unit is also a ventilator and will give oxygen at regular intervals (based on the weight of the pet) if the animal does not breathe by itself. It delivers anesthesia gas, isoflurane, in precisely measured amounts to the specific weight of the pet.
While the pet is “under” we use various monitoring equipment to assure the animal is safe while anesthetized. Our Cardell monitor continuously displays heart rate and oxygen levels in the blood as well as measures blood pressure. An esophageal probe measures body temperature. We use a warm air heating unit to wrap around the animal’s body to keep a normal body temperature. The ability to control temperature is depressed when under anesthesia; and if the pet gets cold recovery will take much longer. An IV catheter is placed in many patients, and fluids are administered using an IV pump. This allows us direct access to a vein during the procedure should we need to administer any emergency drugs; but more importantly fluids given IV help maintain a normal blood pressure while anesthetized.
By observing all vital parameters and delivering gas and oxygen in the safest manner as well as maintaining a normal body temperature our patients have a safe anesthesia experience. They are almost always able to walk around as well as eat and drink in the afternoon after a morning procedure; and most can safely go home the same day.
